CHE COS’E’
Le grattugie di Massimo Antonelli sono la periferia di Scampia e del Corviale, sono alienazione, disagio e sofferenza; sono palazzi cone l’Unité d’Habitation di Le Corbusier, una “macchina” per abitare, dove tutto è organizzato, previsto, studiato e progettato.
Sono anche le New York, Manhattan, le metropoli brulicanti di impiegati e uomini indaffarati, prigionieri dei propri affari; sono i quartieri alti, i condomini di viale delle Milizie, e delle eleganti palazzine belle epoque con inquilini perbenisti e benpensanti; sono i villini di via del Papavero e del viale dei Tigli dove, in contrapposizione ai nomi naturalistici, l’uomo interviene devastando l’ambiente e la natura, cercando di riparare dedicando ai fiori la toponomastica… Ma sono sempre palazzi, con buchi al posto delle finestre. Palazzi che, come le grattugie, grattano, fanno male, chiudono gli abitanti in prigioni fisiche o mentali.
Chi abita in questi palazzi sono uomini senza contatti umani in condomini spaesanti, uomini nel degrado delle periferie, uomini in blocchi di cemento che soffocano di lavoro, uomini borghesi dietro la facciata del perbenismo.
Il progetto prevede l’installazione di una scultura di Massimo Antonelli, una grattugia di metallo alta 4 mt., larga 1,70 mt. e profonda 1,20 mt. in diverse piazze di città italiane – per circa due mesi in ciascuna città – invitando writers locali ad intervenire sulla grattugia con graffiti e scritte a piacere.
Prima che la grattugia venga portata nella prossima città, le scritte ed i disegni verranno fotografati e le immagini archiviate in previsione di una pubblicazione con tutte le fotografie.
Dopo ogni tappa, la grattugia viene nuovamente imbiancata e trasportata in un’altra città ricominciando la performance di essere decorata da altri artisti locali.
Il “tour” prevede di coinvolgere almeno una decina di città, dal nord al sud Italia. Alla fine del viaggio, sarà sverniciata e portata in acciaio per essere venduta all’asta ed una parte del ricavato destinato a co-finanziare altri progetti artistici e culturali di Associazioni di graffitisti.
Per questo progetto si necessita di finanziamenti e sponsorizzazioni per l’organizzazione, i trasporti, la pulitura e la smaltatura della scultura e per la pubblicazione del volume fotografico con testi critici e commenti anche da parte delle amministrazioni comunali che vorranno aderire al progetto ospitando la grattugia nelle proprie piazze.
Il progetto è stato ideato da Massimo Antonelli e da Claudia Lodolo nell’ottica di creare un dialogo fra i centri delle città e le periferie. La grattugia diventa l’emblema della periferia che si sposta al centro della città e, simbolicamente, al centro dell’attenzione. Per farlo, si presta a fare da “palazzo virtuale” su cui graffitisti e writers si sfidano con le loro creazioni artistiche.
Al progetto è stato concesso il gratuito patrocinio del Garante Diritti Detenuti del Lazio e dell’ A.N.C.I.
L’obiettivo di questo “tour“ è quello di sensibilizzare le forze culturali e sociali del nostro Paese sulla progettazione urbanistica: com’è noto ed evidente agli occhi di tutti, con le periferie italiane si è costruita una disgregazione urbana, ambientale, sociale e culturale, violentando spesso sia i dintorni delle città italiane che i centri storici.
Il progetto, coinvolgendo writers e graffitisti locali, ha anche l’obiettivo di educare al Graffitismo artistico e di contrapporlo a quello vandalico.
OUR STORY
Massimo Antonelli graters are the suburbs of Scampia and Corviale, are alienation, discomfort and suffering, are palaces like the Unité d’Habitation by Le Corbusier, a “machine” to live, where everything is organized, planned and designed.
They are also New York, Manhattan, the teeming metropolis of employees and business men, prisoners of their own affairs; are uptown, condos in Militia avenue and the elegant belle époque buildings with respectable and well-meaning tenants , are the villas of Poppy Riad and Linden Boulevard, where, in contrast to the names of nature, man intervenes devastating the environment and nature, trying to repair, dedicating flowers to the place names … But they’re always palaces, with holes instead of windows. Palaces that, such as graters, scratch, hurt, close people in their physical or mental prisons.
Who lives in these buildings are men without human contacts in bewildering condos, men in the deterioration of neighborhoods, men in concrete blocks that stifle working, middle-class men behind the facade of respectability.
The project involves the installation of a sculpture by Massimo Antonelli, a metal grater 4 meters high, 1.70 meters wide and 1.20 meter deep in different squares of Italian cities – for about two months in every city – inviting local writers to intervene on the grater with graffiti and written at will.
Before the grating is taken to the next town, the lettering and designs will be photographed and the images stored in anticipation of a publication with all the images.
After each stage, the grater is again whitewashed and transported to another city restarting the performance to be decorated by local artists.
The “tour” is expected to involve at least a dozen cities, from north to south Italy. At the end of the trip, it will be stripped and brought steel to be sold at auction and a portion of the proceeds is intended to co-finance other artistic projects and cultural associations of graffiti.
For this project funding and sponsorship for the organization, transport, polishing, and glazing of the sculpture and the publication of the photo book with critical essays and commentaries also by municipalities that want to join the project by hosting the grater in their own squares are required.
The project was designed by Massimo Antonelli and Claudia Lodolo in order to create a dialogue between the centers of cities and suburbs. The grater becomes the emblem of the suburbs that moves to the center of the city and, symbolically, the center of the attention. To do so, it lends itself to act as a “virtual building ” on which graffiti artists and writers compete with their artistic creations.
The project has gained the sponsorship by the Garante Diritti Detenuti del Lazio and A.N.C.I.
The goal of this “tour” is to raise awareness of the social and cultural forces of our country on urban design: as known and obvious for all to see, with the Italian suburbs, a urban, environmental, social and cultural disintegration has been built, often raping the surroundings of the Italian cities and historical centers.
The project, involving local graffiti artists and writers, also aims to educate the Street Art and contrast it to the vandalism.

Il progetto Grattugia’n Graffiti è un evento gratuito per il pubblico che si sostiene in maniera autonoma, a volte faticosamente, grazie al contributo di sponsor senza però aver mai avuto finora finanziamenti da parte di amministrazioni locali o enti pubblici.

Should any Municipality or Company have the desire to host the grater for an event, please send via e-mail a request or collaboration proposal.
We also accept proposals from Street Artist who want to be part of this large team and decorate, during a stop, the grater by Massimo Antonelli. They can write and contact the author by sending a CV and photos of their work or submit their website.
The project Grattugia’n Graffiti is a free event for the public that is self-supporting independently, sometimes laboriously, thanks to the contribution of sponsors without, however, having had any funding from local government or public agencies.
